In every chess match, each piece undergoes a unique journey throughout it’s duration. Every single move matters, each one more important than the last.
The majority of abilities for each piece are fairly straightforward, but some pieces have hidden abilities.
This is what makes the pawn so unique, it has more of these hidden abilities than any other piece on the board. Initially the pawn may seem as disposable as it is ineffective, however there are reasons why it’s often referred to as the “soul” of chess. Here are some lessons from the Profound Pawn:
- Take Things One Square at a Time.
The pawn only has the ability to move forward a single square at a time, except on its first move where it has the choice to move forward two squares.
- Keep Moving Forward; You Can’t Go Back.
It’s also the only chess piece that cannot move backwards in the game of chess.
- We are Stronger Together.
On their own, pawns may appear weak and may become a positional liability, yet when banded together, pawns create a pawn structure, a formidable defensive position.
- Transformation Requires Patience.
The true power of the pawn can only be unleashed one way: The pawn must venture from its starting position, all the way to the opponents final row of squares on the opposing side.
If the pawn is able to reach the opposing end of the board, it can transform into any piece available in the game of chess, except the King since there’s already one too many of those!
